Go to villages to explore the real China

Hamza Hachmaoul

On Nov. 20, as a part of China Exploring course, the students of Zhejiang University of Science and Technology had an opportunity to discover Shuangjiang villagelocated in the west of Fuyang district , Hangzhou. The village has a total area of 3.6 square kilometers, 306 households and a total population of 1,085, including 348 She ()villagers.

Once we arrived, the unique folk culture, beautiful natural scenery, and the good ecological environment amazed us. Our first stop was The Square of She Ethnic Culture, and we were welcomed by a group of local people wearing traditional clothes and greeting us with an astonishing dance. As a welcome gift, they offered us a black rice dessert and a glass of a traditional local wine of She ethnic minority. Then they invited us to come to dance with them. Their first dance was easy to learn, and the second was a bit hard because it required a combination of different movements that needed more practices.

After that, we had the chance to meet Mr. Xu Dongwu, head of the village. He made a brief introduction of the village, including folk ecological tourism, food, vegetable planting, undergrowth economy, and other industries, as well as the provincial pilot project for the revitalization of She ethnic villages. Then he gave us an example of an inspirational story of a local young man from the village who made everyone proud of his success. He returned to the village from the urban area and opened a successful factory of local food that offered job opportunities to the locals and raised their income.

Our next stop was Shangshan village of Fuyang, with an area of 3.2 square kilometers,328 households and a total population of 1,100. It is the east gate of Xindeng town. This village has been successively awarded as a group with outstanding achievements in urban and rural community governance and service, thanks to an advanced and specific practice of garbage classification.

Can you imagine writing all the family names of the villagers on a board of a calendar like chart? If a family separates the garbage perfectlyit will get a red dot, less perfect, a yellow dot. Not everyone is perfect, therefore there are some 1% of families with yellow marks.

In addition, the village women's federation relies on women volunteers to form a clean volunteer team, a beautiful courtyard and garbage classification supervision team. Isn't that amazing?
